This new state-of-the-art six-storey building provides a game changing approach to STEM teaching and research for the University and will link directly into the existing Dalton Tower, providing enhanced accessibility and visibility across all floorplates.
The new building will act as a living lab showcasing research and education to maximise collaboration with the city’s burgeoning SciTech industry. The floors connect all spaces through open balconies and atria to maximise opportunities for positive impact and intellectual collision prompting new ways of working and research.
The design of the building is rooted in sustainability demonstrating the technology embedded within it. A new energy centre using ground source heat pumps powered from the aquifer will provide heating and cooling to the building through embedded pipework within the exposed concrete slabs. The building will achieve WELL ‘Gold’ and BREEAM ‘Excellent’ standards.
The building will also house a 200-person superlab that can accommodate a range of research groups providing the greatest flexibility to teach the next generation of students.
